LOCAL NEWS

2. Road closures start today

Two East Grinstead roads have closures from today, Monday 26 October, for utility work.

College Lane is closed from Old Road northwards to De La Warr Road until Friday 6 November, so the gas mains can be replaced. Garland Road is closed to southbound traffic for 40 metres from the London Road (A22) junction until Tuesday 10 November, while new electricity cables go in.

Diversions are signed, and access to homes stays open. Questions go to West Sussex County Council on 01243 642105. Heading to the Mayor's Quiz at East Court on Tuesday or the theatre later in the week? Allow a bit of extra time.

College Lane on a quieter day. Part of it, from Old Road to De La Warr Road, is closed from 26 October to 6 November.

Short closures today: micro asphalt surfacing on Stoneleigh Close (8am to 6pm), and on St Margarets Road and Greenstede Avenue (both 9:30am to 2:30pm). Greenstede Avenue is due again on Tuesday, 9:30am to 2:30pm.

Late trains: because of engineering work, from Monday to Thursday this week the 22:50 and 23:22 from London Victoria stop at East Croydon, with a replacement bus on to East Grinstead, and the 23:06 from East Grinstead to Victoria is replaced by a bus to East Croydon.

Coming up

4. Glen Vue: what happens next

Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove is closing its in-person service at the Glen Vue Centre on Railway Approach at the end of October. Age UK says attendance is low on some days and the building has become too expensive to run.

Age UK says its dementia services in East Grinstead are not closing and will move to other venues from November:

  • Memory Café at Trinity Methodist Church, RH19 2HA, every other Wednesday, 2pm to 4pm, £2.50 per person

  • Dementia respite at East Court Mansion (Cranston Suite), every Tuesday and Thursday, 10am to 3pm, £60 per session

Families who rely on the centre have spoken about how much it will be missed, and Councillor Jacquie Russell has said she's working with the county council and local groups to try to keep the building going as a community hub. The Town Council says it is talking to Age UK about which services local people will lose. The Repair Café, held at Glen Vue since 2019, is also moving.

5. Looking back: thousands at the Community Bonfire

More than 3,000 people came out for East Grinstead's Community Bonfire on Saturday 17 October, according to the organisers. The night began at 6pm with a remembrance service at the war memorial, followed by the procession from Church Lane at 7pm and the bonfire and fireworks at East Court from 9pm.

Staypuff Marshmallow Man won this year's build-a-guy competition, chosen by Deputy Mayor Craig Pond, and took pride of place on top of the bonfire. Mims Davies MP joined local councillors and residents, along with visiting mayors from our twin towns in Germany, France and Italy.

It was the fourth bonfire since the group formed in 2022. The money raised is being shared between the bonfire society, Jigsaw Southeast, Quarry Cafe and East Grinstead Community Fridge.

Missed it? Lingfield Park's Fireworks Night is on Thursday 5 November (fireworks 6pm to 7pm). Standard adult, child and family tickets were showing as sold out when we checked, so look before you go.

Local grill up for two British Kebab Awards

E G Charcoal Grill in Railway Approach is a finalist in two categories at the 15th British Kebab Awards: Best Delivery and Best Takeaway, South of England. It's one of 283 finalists across 22 categories, alongside Mustis Grill and Shiraz Bar and Restaurant in Horley and Dem Shish in Crawley.

Public voting is open until 31 January 2027, with one vote per person in each category, and the winners will be announced on 23 February. Fittingly, Mims Davies MP finished her bonfire night with a late kebab from there too.
